An Indian wedding is a union of two individuals for life. It is a union of two families and a union of two communities. A wedding is a celebration, a festival, and above all it shines with all the colours of a rainbow.

Indian weddings in India are different than in Britain mainly due to the huge difference in the weather, space, facilities and availability of a support network.

Owing to the fact that an Indian wedding is not just a one day event there are several important aspects of the celebration. One of them is music; more specifically, traditional songs. An Indian wedding would not be a wedding without songs. In Britain Indians celebrate with music, mainly Bollywood songs played loudly on DVD. The type of song also varies depending on the event. For example, if it is 'Mehdi' (Henna), then songs will be related to henna. Whereas, if event is 'Sangeet' and dance then again the songs played will be in line with that.

In India, in 'Mehdi' approximately two hundred ladies and 50 children gather in the evening. Food will be served to every one including the male members of the house and once the meal is over the men will be asked to leave. Then a group of singers sing traditional wedding songs beginning with all kinds of songs with many lyrics which are very emotional and moving. Consequently, it is not uncommon for many women to cry. The way on which the singing is arranged is also significant; one person will lead then the remaining ladies will repeat the same line in a chorus.

This could go on for two hours then the young friends of the bride will perform a dance to Bollywood music for hours one after the other. Sometimes even men will enter in ladies costume; wearing saris and sitting at the back. This is the real fun of a wedding. Everyone enjoys the night, including the neighbours! No one complains about this even if it lasts until 3 in the morning. However, if this event takes place till late then your neighbours will be first one to give you hard time unless they have been fed well or unless they are sitting in your party too!

The joy of weddings; the fun and the real charm of the event, especially of Indian weddings is music. Without this it it isn't a wedding.

If you are going on a trip and want to leave something for your partner to find, you can plan ahead and drop an item or a ‘care package’ on the bed or in the kitchen before you leave. If you’d rather ‘send’ something from afar, you can do that too.

Be creative and you can come up with a lot of ideas on your own.

You can buy these items in advance and prepare the package to be mailed later, and then tuck the package(s) in your suitcase, OR you can buy the items on the road and mail the package back when you feel your partner needs a pick-me-up.

These packages don't have to be expensive or elaborate. It is the THOUGHT that counts.

Be sure you wrap fragile items well so they don't arrive broken, and be sure to put enough postage on the package so it doesn't get returned to you!

Here are some things to consider:

Write a short note for every day or for special dates, you will be gone, and place each note in an envelope. Write the date you want your partner to open the note on the front of each envelope.

If you know your husband has to make a big presentation at work on a certain day, write a note to boost his confidence and tell him you believe in him and label the note for him to open on that date.

You can mail the package with all the notes in it and your partner will look forward to opening each note while you are away!

Make or buy a calendar and write notes on the calendar for each day or for special days. Your partner can hang the calendar at home or in the office and she will be reminded that you are thinking of her every time she reads a note you've written.

Handmade, silly calendars with art work and drawings, or with pasted or taped pictures of you, or of ‘special places’ you’ve gone together are especially effective!

Even if you aren't a master artist of photographer, your partner will love the thought!

Include a personal item in the package (an earring, a comb, a cufflink or something that belongs to you. If it is part of a pair, and you keep the other part with you, the thought is even more romantic).

Include a non-perishable edible item (like a lollipop, or perhaps a small bag of trail mix if your spouse uses that for energy while biking or walking his exercise trail)

Make a CD of a song or songs you both love and send a copy with a romantic title or note.

Cut words or phrases out of the on board airline magazine and tape or glue them on the hotel stationary to make a funny or sweet love letter ‘from the road’.

Actual marriage generally takes place when girl attains the age of sixteen.

According to the local tradition, every marriage requires two exchanges. A dowry is brought by the bride to the husband's house. It generally constitutes household items which the couple will need for their future life together.

On the other side, 'mahr' which is the price for the girl is paid by the groom. It generally consists of livestock, property and money.

Wedding day is the day of great activity for the family. Gathering of friends and relatives is held to compliment the couple and their families. Whole environment presents a festive look.

Special dishes are prepared which include kababs grilled on skewers, nan which is Afghan bread in flat and oval shaped, stewed vegetables and rice cooked with meat.

In the evening, women sit inside the courtyard. The men sit in 'hujara', which is a large room with Afghan carpets and cushions. Hujara is place where men sit. In Afghanistan and other traditional Islamic cultures, it is customary to have men and women separated at social events.

Every arrangement for the comforts of the guests is done. In the evening, a feast is organized. As is dictated by the Pushtun tradition of hospitability, the hosts will not eat until after the guests have had their fill.

In the end, music is played to mark the atmosphere with gaiety and excitement.

The Afghan laws govern the marriages. A Muslim man can marry a non Muslim woman but a non Muslim woman cannot marry a Muslim man.

When a Muslim man wants to marry a foreign woman who is non-Muslim and the woman is not "kitabi" that is of the book, she must first convert to Islam. In either case, the court will only register the marriage religiously, with the "nekah ceremony". When both the parties are Muslim, the Family Court will register the marriage and perform the Muslim "nekah"ceremony. The "nekah"is comprised of the "igaba wa qabul" which is an acceptance agreement and the "khotba".

In case of both non-Muslim foreigners, the court will register the marriage by performing solely the "igaba wa qabul" or acceptance agreement. The court will also seek to apply the regulations which govern marriages in the couples' home country. Though Afghan law permits polygamy but American men will not be allowed to marry multiple women.
