Work-Life Balance
Author: Suma Careertunity
Work-life balance is a phrase some may call a cliché while others might ask ‘What’s the big deal?’ about it. As a concept it is indeed a big-deal, otherwise it wouldn’t have been spoken of for so many years and gained an ever-increasing number of proponents. The beauty of determining a 'work-life' balance is that there is no simple formula that applies to all, and therefore every individual can arrive at their own solution. However to do so, one first needs to understand the importance and essentials of this concept.
The circle of need keeps expanding as we earn more – what were formerly necessities become basics and luxuries become necessities. This is a dynamic process. In order to fulfill these, we work harder as we chase an un-ending goal. At the end of the day we all only have 24 hours – even though many of us may wish a day had 48 hours. If we had 48, then there are those who would possibly wish for a day of 72 hours. This explains the expanding circle of need.
Some may still ask, why do we need to talk about work-life balance? If we are unable to balance our professional and personal lives it will have harmful manifestations such as stress related disorders, discord in relationships - further adding to the stress - and most importantly, a missed opportunity to live a happy and healthy life. In today’s world, 4 out of 10 people agree that their work life is stressful. Furthermore, the medical fraternity has been witnessing a rise in stress related ailments.
Take control of the situation: don’t let the situation take control of you. The concept of what is considered a work-life balance cannot be applied identically to everyone. It is fluid and can be adopted in different ways depending on the needs of each individual. Not all aspects of our life can be controlled however, but it is important to identify and work on those which can be. If your answers to the questions below are positive, then you are moving in the right direction:
- Do you feel that your body is healthy?
- Are you happy with the way you manage your time?
- When is the last time you worked on the importance-urgent matrix?
- Are you happy with the quantity and quality of time you give to your family or personal life?
- Are you comfortable with the expectations of your organization?
- Are you happy with the inter-personal relationships at work?
- Are you having regular meals?
A common problem that recurs in many work environments is the communication gap. Communication should be made clearly to avoid confusion. A lack of communication skills could lead to the accumulation of extra work and wasting of time. Sharing of work should happen - and in a fair way too. This is a generation where hard work and smart work go hand in hand. Having said that, communication is also an important aspect in one's personal life and this door should be kept open.
An alternate way that could help to maintain a work – life balance is planning. The matrix of urgent-important can be a useful tool in this regard. Work for the day should be laid out in a clear order on the basis of importance. The time frame given for each goal or aim to be targeted should be achieved. A day that is carried out without planning is sure to get into a mess. A few benefits of following such a procedure are:
- Extra work need not be taken home
- Work of the day will not get postponed
- Will result in a free mind
- Gives room for a quality personal life
It is also important to make sure that the work completed during the course of the day is perfect. This will help one to go on with the next task and not be stuck with the same one for too long.
In discussing work-life balance, while making clear the path of one's professional life, it also becomes vital to deal with one's personal life in a similar manner. A clear view of managing this also becomes necessary. When prioritized, this aspect becomes the need of the hour – and more for women than for men. It is generally regarded that women find it very difficult to manage both professional and family lives. Society demands perfection from women both professionally and personally. With this in mind, it is important to plan the household work also to maintain the work-life balance.
‘Winners do not do different things - they do things differently’. This is a quote that one should bear in mind. Here, ‘winner’ specifies an individual who knows to balance both their professional and personal lives. The ideas and aspects mentioned here are only a part of a vast field. As mentioned, work-life balance is fluid, but nevertheless is a valuable tool by which each individual can shape their own life.

How to Avoid Being a Victim of the Liar
Author: Jim DeSantis
Although honesty is generally taught as the best policy, I would propose that it is the only policy to follow in 99% of cases. The other 1% could be called "white lies.” How are you to know the difference, that is, when someone is telling the whole truth as opposed to a white lie? Here are some tips that will help you spot a liar.
There was an old Hollywood movie starring Charles Bronson as a buffalo hunter and Will Sampson as an Indian Chief. They are in a cave together, hunting the same killer white buffalo, when they engage in a conversation about truth. Bronson, known to the Indians as "the shooter" because he is a skilled hunter, has his version of the truth and the Chief has his. The Chief asks - "Tell me Shooter, what is the true truth?" I ask you the same question. For me, the true truth is the whole truth, no shading. What is it for you?
As we go about our interaction with each other, the white lie is employed more than any other form of communication with those closest to us. We are more apt to shade the truth in order to avoid hurt feelings or, when we know a person really well, we tell a white lie because we know they really don't want the true truth. They have their version of the true truth and that's the version they want to hear.
When we deal with strangers, telling a lie is easy because we likely will never see them again but what about that stranger we may see again? You need to decide if what you are lying about is worth what you will gain as opposed to the potential consequences if your lie is discovered. It is a personal decision. You need to be realistic with yourself. It is easy to become a compulsive liar and ruin your life. Under what circumstances are you willing to risk damaging relationships, reputation, and future opportunities. Ask yourself. Do the benefits of telling the lie outweigh the risks?
For example: A teen boy tells his parents he's going to the movies with a friend but he's really going to a concert with his girlfriend. Logically, the parents are going to ask what the movie was about and if he enjoyed it. Now, beforehand, the teen could Google a summary of what was in the movie; along with the climax so he can be ready for the questions. Such a young man may not consider the consequences if he is caught in the lie. He does not realize that his parents will be emotionally hurt by his lie and will take a long time before ever trusting him again. His lie has destroyed the parent-child relationship for a long time to come.
Telemarketing has taught us that it's relatively easy to lie to someone over the phone because the sense of personal connection is very small. You can't see them; they can't see you. As a result, you are less likely to feel guilty and, therefore, give visual clues that you may be deviating from your normal behavior. If you were closer to the person physically, you would have a greater personal connection. Consequently, you would be more likely to reveal, in some way, that you are engaging in deceptive behavior.
The same reasoning applies to being close to a person psychologically. If you try to lie to your girlfriend or boyfriend, there are numerous psychological pressures. For example, you'll think about what happens if you get caught, feel guilty about lying to someone you care about and it will be more difficult to focus on mimicking your normal behavior. This phenomenon is often called "liars’ remorse," and it's usually what people are talking about when they say a liar "wants to get caught." Those closest to us know when we are lying and when we are shading the truth a bit.
Most strangers will not have a clue if you are an accomplished liar. It takes years, by the way, to develop a liar's mentality. An amateur liar will not look you right in the eye when lying. They may touch their head with their hand, or hold their palms up as they spin the lie. These are both giveaways. An accomplished liar does the opposite. They look you in the eye, their hands at their side. An amateur liar will use the strongest adjectives and a voice level that are above normal pitch and speed. A friend of mine says - "I can tell when someone's lying. They talk faster than I can listen."
Most professionals employ specific tactics to catch liars. The cops will make small talk with you to establish what your "normal" behaviors are. When they get down to the serious subject matter, they look for cracks in that normal behavior. Polygraph machines work the same way. There are mental and physical drives that can be detected by skilled interviewers, as well as machines.
There are many more subliminal messages people send when lying. Do some research and learn what they are and how to avoid them.

Different Resumes for Different Job Descriptions
Author: Sarika Kabra
It would be a mistake to assume that once you have your resume sample ready, it can be used for all purposes and for any occasion no matter what kind of job it is you are seeking or applying for. While ideally your sample resume should contain all the salient features of your accomplishments, experiences and skills, the sample that you actually prepare for a prospective employer to peruse, should be suitably amended with certain details added or subtracted according to the particular requirement of that job description.
You should take into account not only the field in which you are seeking a position, but also the position or level or seniority you are seeking to obtain, when you make appropriate amendments to your sample resume. If for instance you are seeking a managerial position of some seniority then you should add to resume sample details outlining your leadership qualities or managerial experiences or skills you have acquired. Since a manager is expected to have not only educational qualifications but other qualities such good communication skills, organizational skills etc., those points would lend weight to your resume. Any experience in a supervisory or managerial capacity should certainly be included, citing the most recent first and so on. If work experience is limited or none, campus activities, community participation or membership in other professional organizations should be mentioned to indicate managerial qualities.
Similarly, you can make appropriate adjustments or amendments to your sample resume if you are applying for a position in a communications related sector. In this case you should include not just your qualifications or educational credentials but also information about your extracurricular activities, such as public speaking experiences or other skills you may have acquired that could demonstrate your communication skills. It would be useful mention any additional expertise you may have acquired or award or honors you may have received during your professional or educational tenure.
Now say you are applying for a position in a creative field; take advertising for instance, then you would need to make some specific inclusions in your resume sample which highlights your creative abilities and how your contributions were made to a previous employers’ successful projects if applicable. Or if you are applying for a position of an artist, there are specific additions that you need to make to your sample or basic resume: you need to add a bibliography where you mention all the mediums where material of yours has been published, mention all awards or prizes won.
It also pays to research the industry or segment that you mean to apply for a job within, even to research and study the specific issues faced by the industry in general and the company or organization in particular. This indicates not only an interest in and knowledge of your sphere of expertise, it also indicates your ability to grapple with problems and displays creativity in terms of problem solving. Experience, even if it is from the distant past ought to be included if it adds value to your resume. Hence it makes sense to tailor your sample resume to suit the particular requirement of the situation.
